Marty used to pick an activity to do once a day for 30 days. Three times, he did this with songs, writing 90 of them. Twice, he did this with sock puppets.

“It’s like an exercise, forcing yourself to do something and seeing what you come up with,” he says.

These days Marty, 29, works with songs and sock puppets. He makes puppets’ faces with hot glue and foam and gives them names like Harold Speculex, Zimmy Zambini and Terrycloth Green. (”I’m an excellent, excellent namer,” he says.) He performs his songs with his band, Uncle Monsterface, which has both human and puppet members.

Marty, a Boston native and Massachusetts College of Art grad, has long loved drawing, painting and performance art. He made his first sock puppet while working with children in Boston; while he does freelance design work, he says the puppets now provide most of his income. Every weekend he’s not performing with the band, Marty is in Union Square selling portraits of puppets in faux-ornate picture frames. People snap them up.

“It struck some magical chord with people,” he says, clearly awed by the fact that this is his living.

“I’m making something that I would think was wonderful if I found it,” he says. “As an artist, I’ve always liked things that are embedded in pop culture and accessible.”

James S.

James markets salon services to women on the street corners of New York, but what he really wants to discuss is his new company. Next month, it launches: Scent of Indie 360, a sort-of Second Life for the culturally inclined, an online community that James hopes will nurture independent artists and change everything about the music industry and art world.

The project enlists indie artists and distributes their work to members of an online community, who will fill virtual homes with their favorite stuff. The members, called Fan Investors, can rate what they consume and increase an artist’s “stock,” while at the same time buy real merchandise for use outside the site. The company has many other tentacles — a magazine, TV channel and radio show — and is meant to market and distribute indie artists’ work in much the same way iTunes has sold the mainstream.

“The world population will be able to see art in a brand-new way,” says James, 38.

James lived in Northern England until he was 8 or 9, and then, after traveling around, moved to the U.S. He spent most of his time in California, where he says he owned a restaurant called the Mediterranean. He sold it — “I just got tired of working 15 hours a day, seven days a week” — and moved East. He now lives just outside of Fort Lee, N.J. with his wife and cat.

While he is focused on the new company, “My ultimate goal in this world is to finish my theory,” James says. “By nature, I’m a scientist. I have an incredible quantum theory that will change the way humanity sees itself.”

His theory will explain how people relate to each other and answer other basic questions about reality. (Reality, he says, is the product of energy and necessity.)

Asked how he gets things done when he has so many ideas, James says: “I usually have a ton of ideas, but I dismiss most of them and focus on the ones that are most important to me.”
